The classic limit for application photos
“Photograph: JPG, 20 KB to 50 KB” is one of the most common lines in exam, recruitment, admission and scholarship notices. Before compressing, make sure the photo itself meets the rules: recent, face centred, plain light background, no cap or sunglasses. To get the right shape (for example 3.5 × 4.5 cm), crop it first with the exam photo and signature resizer, which also lets you choose the size in KB in the same step.
“Between 20 and 50 KB”
Some forms reject files that are too small as well as too large. With a high-resolution phone photo the result stays close to the 50 KB limit, so it falls within that range. If you start from a very small image and the result is below 20 KB, increase the quality in Compress Image instead of compressing to a fixed size.
