How to compress a PDF to 1 MB
- Click Choose PDF.
- Click Compress to 1 MB.
- Download the file. The result is always under 1,000,000 bytes, so it is accepted even by sites that count 1 MB that way.
The most common upload limit
Visa and immigration portals, university admissions, scholarship and job applications, landlords' and agencies' forms: when a website limits the size of an attachment, 1 MB per file is one of the most common rules. At this size even long scanned documents usually stay perfectly readable, with text kept sharp.
1 MB is generous for most documents
- Contracts and reports exported from Word: usually already under 1 MB — they only need compressing when they include large images.
- Scans of 5 to 15 pages: fit in 1 MB with good quality after compression.
- PDFs from phone photos: often 5–20 MB; compressing to 1 MB is exactly what they need.
Several documents, one limit per file
If the form asks for each document separately, compress each one; if it wants a single file, join them with Merge PDF first. When even 1 MB isn't enough, split the document with Split PDF → By size (MB).

Frequently asked questions
Is 1 MB counted as 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?
Websites differ. We keep the file under 1,000,000 bytes, which satisfies both ways of counting.
How long does it take?
Usually a few seconds. Large scans with many pages can take a little longer, especially on a phone.
Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no watermark.
